Bird Damage in Grapes

Return to Wildlife

Birds (various species of small birds, such as American robins (Turdus migratorius), mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos), and many other similar sized avian species), consume or damage fruit as it begins to ripen. Depending on the species present, damage may range from pecking injury to absence of fruit. Secondary issues may include the introduction of weed seeds and subsequent weed establishment.

Management:

  • Use netting over plants to help limit bird access and feeding. Check netting regularly and repair holes promptly.
  • Use deterrents, such as lasers, auditory distress tapes, and propane cannons to limit damage or to protect crops during the harvest period. Deterrents that may be less effective but can be used in combination with other methods include predatory balloons, raptor decoys, or fake snakes. Combinations of deterrents will be more successful than using just one.
