Excessive Nitrogen in Brambles

Excessive Nitrogen in Brambles

Return to Abiotic Disorders

Excessive nitrogen applications or high levels of soil organic matter leads to extensive cane growth and susceptibility to winter injury. This also increases need for frequent pruning and training requirements.

Management:

  • Monitor cane growth and submit soil samples for testing.
  • Apply nitrogen fertilizer in spring only.
  • Nitrogen levels need to be lower in autumn in preparation for winter hardiness development.
